Modeshift STARS school travel plans

Use an online planning toolkit to encourage active and sustainable travel to and from school.

Modeshift STARS enables the development of school travel plans via an online planning toolkit – with the aim of promoting safe, sustainable active travel. Through the toolkit and travel plans, schools can:

  • Identify and address transport issues around school

  • Collect data about levels of participation in active and sustainable travel

  • Plan, deliver and evaluate initiatives to increase levels of participation in active and sustainable travel

  • Be recognised for excellence in promotion of active and sustainable travel through National STARS Accreditation.

Accreditation and benefits

National STARS Accreditation for schools championing active travel

Schools that show excellence in promoting walking, cycling, scooting and wheeling to and from school can be awarded National STARS Accreditation. There are five levels of accreditation: Approved, Good, Very Good, Excellent, and Outstanding.

All accredited schools receive a certificate and can use the Modeshift STARS logo on their websites and other materials, and can access to dataset of travel habits to help identify the potential for reducing congestion and air pollution around schools. Following the steps toward gaining accreditation can help your school meet wellbeing targets and reduce climate impacts.

Support and resources available

Helping your school every step of the way

TfGM and your local authority can help with using the Modeshift STARS online toolkit, developing travel plans and active travel initiatives, and gaining National STARS Accreditation.

A step by step guide is available as well as other resources, and support webinars are held every half term. Get in touch for more information and to get started!

Modeshift STARS aligns well with other schemes such as Youth Travel Ambassadors (secondary schools only) and School Streets. The Schools Active Travel Calendar can be helpful to plan initiatives that link different schemes.
