What is a 'School Street'?
We're transforming the school run
A School Street makes it safer for students to walk, wheel or scoot to and from school by restricting access to motorised vehicles outside a school at drop-off and pick-up times.
School Streets aim to create a pleasant, safe and child-friendly environment around schools, while making sure that essential access to the area is still possible.
Each School Street is implemented in a way that suits the needs of the school and local community. In most cases, a School Street zone consists of a traffic regulation order and related signage, making the road(s) outside the school a pedestrian and cyclist zone at drop-off and pick-up times during school terms
By encouraging more sustainable, active forms of travel, and reducing traffic and parking pressures outside schools during term time, air quality is also improved.
School Streets are making a difference
